Located in the Caribbean, the island of Puerto Rico is known for its warm people and beautiful scenery. However, Puerto Rico rapid development over the past 50 years has affected the balance between urbanization and sustainability.
The University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the Caribbean. The UPR has a balanced mixture between academics and the cultural development of the student, with a diverse, interdisciplinary curriculum. Environmental Sciences is a program with several focal areas including natural and human systems, environmental sociology, water management, economics, physical geology, water resources, geographic information systems, tropical island marine resources, among others. Our program, although small, has become popular among students due to the increase in interest in environmental issues, especially in the rapidly growing Caribbean region. Our faculty is very diverse and has active collaborations with researchers around the world especially in Central and South America and the Caribbean. Coursework is complemented by field work that helps the student to identify environmental problems and develop viable solutions to those problems.
The Environmental Sciences program aims to provide an integrated, quantitative and interdisciplinary focus to the study of natural and human systems and to provide the student with the necessary skills to advance knowledge in the discipline in an academic, industrial or government environment.
