U.S Citizenship or Permanent Residence

Acceptance or current enrollment in a PhD program at the UPRRP in disciplines of interest to IGERT (Social Sciences, Humanities, Environmental Science and other programs in Natural Sciences).


$30,000/year for two years (plus full registration and medical insurance for those two years) subject to approval of grant extension by NSF.

$2,000 for travel approved by IGERT Steering Committee.

Eligibility to participate in the Competitive Small Grants Program

Use of IGERT Program equipment under the program usage guidelines (camera, digital table, computers, ArcGIS software and Lab, etc…)

Reserved space in all IGERT activities (Proposal writing full day workshop, Safety, Ethics and Human Subject half day workshops, National Geographic Filmmaking Seminar, etc…).


Registration and completion of IGERT’s 6 core courses (1 year)

Participation in ALL IGERT activities

Give a yearly report as stated in the Handbook

Dissertation or thesis must confirm to the IGERT requirements

2. Attach a pdf version of your Curriculum vitae and a statement of no more than 1,000 words indicating your research interests, a proposed research project for your dissertation and how these fit into the IGERT Program goals. It is important to prepare this statement carefully, indicating how your research interests integrate with the IGERT Program themes and approaches.

4. Once the application is reviewed, an interview will be scheduled with potential associates.
