Environmental Sciences students participate in Miami symposium

Zulimar LucenaUPRRP Environmental Sciences (ES) student Zulimar Lucena presented her undergraduate research at the 1st Annual Environmental Science Symposium at Miami Dade College North Campus.  Her research, titled “Effects of urbanization on tropical stream water temperature and microbial respiration,” was supported by the UPRRP UMEB program directed by Dr. Alonso Ramirez of the Institute for Tropical Ecosystem Studies.

EnviroMentors from the UPRRP ES mentoring program also attended the symposium where they presented a booth about the ES undergraduate and graduate programs as well as touristic information regarding Puerto Rico.

Over 100 Miami Dade County Public Schools Science Teachers attended the event that included forums on Top Environmental Issues Affecting South Florida and Career Paths in Environmental Sciences presented by panel members from UPRRP, USDA, South Florida Water, Florida International University, University of Florida, Everglades National Park, Environmentally Endangered Lands Program, and the League of Environmental Educators.  The keynote address was presented by Dr. Michael Perfit, Univ. of Florida (click here to view abstract).
